Foundation Scriptures:
As for the rich in this world, charge them not to be proud and arrogant and contemptuous of others, nor to set their hopes on uncertain riches, but on God, Who richly and ceaselessly provides us with everything for [our] enjoyment. 18 [Charge them] to do good, to be rich in good works, to be liberal and generous of heart, ready to share [with others], 19 In this way laying up for themselves [the riches that endure forever as] a good foundation for the future, so that they may grasp that which is life indeed. 1 Timothy 6:17-19 AMPC
1. A Generous Father.
a. “Trust…in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy” (1 Tim. 6:17).
b. The Lord does not merely want to meet your needs.
c. The Word reveals to us a generous Father who gives His children good things to enjoy.
d. We should have faith not only for provision, but also for the enjoyment of God’s provision.
e. There is no virtue in being blessed by God and then feeling guilty about enjoying His blessings.
f. When God gives something good, receive it with thanksgiving, honor Him with it, and enjoy it!
2. God Wants You to Enjoy What He Gives You.
a. Ecclesiastes 3:13 KJV –– …every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God.
b. Notice: enjoyment itself is called “the gift of God.”
c. God gives you strength to labor and blesses the work of your hands.
d. He gives increase and He also protects the fruit of your labor.
e. He wants you to enjoy the good that comes from your labor.
f. You should have faith to work and build and plant.
g. But also, to enjoy the fruit of your work, to live in and enjoy what you built, and to eat the fruit of what you planted.
3. Expect To Long Enjoy God’s Blessings.
a. Isaiah 65:21–23 KJV –– And they shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them…mine elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands. …for they are the seed of the blessed of the Lord, and their offspring with them.
b. What a powerful promise!
c. The Lord does not want His people continually laboring for something they never get to enjoy.
d. There is a biblical expectation of long enjoyment.
e. Believe God for longevity and for strength.
f. Trust Him for the opportunity to enjoy your family, your home, your harvest, and the fruit of everything He has enabled you to accomplish.
g. Don’t just expect blessing—expect to be able to enjoy the blessing!
4. Pleasant Places.
a. David declared: “The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance” (Ps. 16:6 NIV).
b. The reference is to the boundary, or location, of an inheritance of land.
c. As we honor the Lord, He places us in an advantageous and favorable position.
d. There are places God brings you that are pleasant and things that He places in your hands that are good.
e. Psalm 36:7–8 says that those who trust in Him: “…shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house; and thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures.”
f. Because God is good, we should expect His goodness, His provision, and His abundance.
g. We should expect pleasant things and enjoy the fruit of our labor.
5. God’s Pleasures Are Not the World’s Pleasures.
a. We must distinguish God’s pleasures from sinful pleasure.
b. The Hebrew and Greek even use different words to differentiate between the two.
c. The pleasures God gives are: Lovely, pleasant, delightful, sweet, and agreeable.
d. Hebrews 11:25 speaks of “the pleasures of sin for a season.”
e. Mark 4:19 warns about “the lusts of other things entering in” and choking the Word.
f. Sinful pleasure flows from fleshly lust and draws the heart away from God.
g. God-given enjoyment does the opposite.
h. It should produce thanksgiving and worship toward God.
i. You can enjoy God’s blessings without worshipping them.
6. Put God First.
a. Put God first—specifically in your giving—then enjoy what He puts in your hand.
b. Proverbs 3:9 KJV –– Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase.
c. Giving keeps our hearts properly aligned.
d. By it, we say, “Lord, You are first. You are my Source. I honor You with what You have placed in my hands.”
e. Then we can freely enjoy His provision because our possessions don’t possess us.
f. 1 Timothy 6:18 tells those who have been blessed to be generous—“ready to distribute, willing to communicate.”
g. God’s plan is not: Receive OR give.
h. It is: Receive; give; bless; enjoy; and then expect God to continue supplying.
i. 2 Corinthians 9:6 says: “He which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.”
7. Build Your Expectation for God’s Goodness.
a. Job 36:11 KJV –– If they obey and serve him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures.
b. Proverbs 24:3–4 speaks of a house established through wisdom whose chambers are: “filled with all precious and pleasant riches.”
c. Stop expecting only enough to survive.
d. Expect God to bless the work of your hands.
e. Expect harvest from your seed.
f. Expect to long enjoy the fruit of your labor.
g. And when God blesses you, enjoy His blessing!
h. Our confidence is not in riches, but in “the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy.”
i. God is your Source.
j. Give thanks; sow generously; keep God first.
k. And enjoy what your Father has provided.
