Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; Yes, our God is merciful. Psalms 116:5 NKJV

The Lord is gracious, righteous and merciful and He expects the same from us, His children. We are made righteous by the blood of Jesus and we are empowered to walk in righteousness by the Holy Spirit. The Word of God is our plumb line, leading us and keeping us on the path God has prepared for us.

I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread. 26 He is ever merciful, and lendeth; and his seed is blessed. Psalms 37:25-26 KJV

The righteous are just like their Father. They are merciful and generous. This is why the Lord will always see to it that they – and their children - are taken care of. David said that he had never – not even once - seen the righteous or their families let down or going without.

Psalm 112 is a great example of the attributes of a righteous man and the blessing upon him and his house as a result.

Praise the Lord! Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, Who delights greatly in His commandments. 2 His descendants will be mighty on earth; The generation of the upright will be blessed. 3 Wealth and riches will be in his house, And his righteousness endures forever. 4 Unto the upright there arises light in the darkness; He is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous. 5 A good man deals graciously and lends; He will guide his affairs with discretion. 6 Surely he will never be shaken; The righteous will be in everlasting remembrance. 7 He will not be afraid of evil tidings; His heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord. 8 His heart is established; He will not be afraid, Until he sees his desire upon his enemies. 9 He has dispersed abroad, He has given to the poor; His righteousness endures forever; His horn will be exalted with honor. 10 The wicked will see it and be grieved; He will gnash his teeth and melt away; The desire of the wicked shall perish. Psalms 112:1-10 NKJV

The righteous man reverentially fears God. He loves God's word; he delights in it; it is his joy to do those things that please his Father. The righteous man keeps his heart right with God. He is gracious and compassionate and is always prepared and willing to help others and to share what he has. He thinks of those less fortunate than himself and makes it his business to help the poor. He seeks opportunities to be a blessing. Psalms 37:21 NKJV says that, "The wicked borrows and does not repay, But the righteous shows mercy and gives." The righteous man's conduct, in business and his personal life, is always governed by his integrity and the principles of God's word.

The righteous man is fully aware of all Father God's promises to him – he counts on Him keeping His word. He is not afraid of evil tidings because his heart is steadfast - he trusts in the Lord completely. He walks in peace and calm assurance even when his circumstances seem totally contrary. He will never be shaken because he chooses to believe God's word over what he can see. He has already seen the hand of God and His faithfulness in his life, and experienced His blessing, favor and provision and He is humbly confident that God will come through for him yet again.

Psalms 112 says that the generation of the upright will be blessed and wealth and riches will be in his house. The righteous are not just a little blessed – they are super-blessed! The Lord makes the righteous to have a surplus of prosperity (Deuteronomy 28:11) and He is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think (Ephesians 3:20)!

Light arises in the darkness for the righteous man – he has understanding, direction and purpose even when others are scared, confused and deceived. He can see his way out of every adverse situation. The name and deeds of a righteous man will be remembered forever – especially in eternity. The Lord will honor him.

For You, O Lord, will bless the righteous; With favor You will surround him as with a shield. Psalms 5:12 NKJV

The righteous will endure forever, because God will deal with his enemies - they will not get away with any bad thing they try to do to him. There is a hedge of God's protection around the righteous. The wicked will see the blessing on the life of the righteous; they will fuss and fume, but they will not be able to harm him. Their plans and desires will perish without coming to pass.

The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. 13 Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. 14 They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing; 15 To shew that the Lord is upright: he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him. Psalms 92:12-15 KJV

The Lord demonstrates His righteousness by keeping His word to His righteous man all the days of his life. The righteous will be fat, flourishing and fruitful well into a good old age and die only when they are satisfied! God is glorified when men see His blessing on the righteous. They see and know that God is indeed good and that He always keeps His promises!
