The Covenant Names of God

Foundation Scriptures:
His name shall endure forever; His name shall continue as long as the sun. Psalm 72:17 NKJV

Let them praise and exalt the name of the Lord, for His name alone is exalted and supreme! His glory and majesty are above earth and heaven! Psalm 148:13 AMPC

1. Who God is to Us. 
a. A name is the thing by which a person or thing is known. 
b. God is called by many different names in the Bible, each of which reveals aspects of His nature and character.

2. ELOHIM. 
a. ELOHIM: Exceedingly Great and Mighty God
        - The first word used in scripture used to designate “God” (the True God).
​​​​       ​​​ - In the beginning ELOHIM created the heaven and the earth (Genesis 1:1). 
b. EL: meaning “God; Mighty One; Strong” (Deuteronomy 32:4). 
       - EL is usually used in compound with other terms as EL, Elyon, EL Shaddai, etc.
c. EL ELYON: Supreme God; The Most High.
d. Deuteronomy 32:8; Genesis 14:18-20; Hebrews 6:20; Philippians 2:9
e. EL OLAM: The Everlasting God (Isaiah 26:4). 
       - Not only is He everlasting in duration, but He is everlastingly faithful.
d. EL SHADDAI: The Almighty God; the All-Sufficient God (Omnipotent) (Genesis 17:1). 
       - Some scholars say the word “shaddai” is derived from the word “shad” meaning breast, giving rise to the names “The Satisfier” and “All Sufficient One” and some say “shad” means “mountain”.
       - Either way, He is still the God who is more than enough!

3. ADONAI.
a. ADONAI: Lord, lord, master, owner, ruler.
b. Used in reference to men and God—it can refer to a person who is a master, owner or ruler, or it can refer to the Lord God, because He is the Master and Owner of everything.
c. Luke 6:46 KJV ­— And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
d. If we call Jesus Lord and do not obey Him then our language and conduct are contradictory. 

4. JEHOVAH—YAHWEH—I AM.
a. The personal and covenant name of God in His relationship as REDEEMER.
b. Exodus 3:13-15; Exodus 6:2-3
c. Jehovah is the name for the Lord God occurring most frequently (5,321 times) in the Old Testament. 
d. “Jehovah” expresses personal relationship; compounded with other terms, together they identify relationships and make them more specific.
e. HA TSUR: The Rock (Immutability of God); metaphorical name. 
f. Deuteronomy 32:4; 1 Corinthians 10:4 

5. The Compound Names of JEHOVAH.
a. JEHOVAH ELOHIM: SUPREME GOD.
       - Genesis 2:4 KJV — These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God [Jehovah Elohim] made the earth and the heavens.
       - This name identifies Jehovah with the creation of all things. 
       - The Triune God is also the Redeemer of His people.

b. JEHOVAH JIREH: The LORD will PROVIDE.
       - Genesis 22:14 AMPC — So Abraham called the name of that place The Lord Will Provide [Jehovah Jireh]. And it is said to this day, On the mount of the Lord it will be provided.
       - God provided a substitute for Isaac and He provided for us, once and for all, a substitute—the Lamb of God. 
       - Romans 8:32 AMPC — He who did not withhold or spare [even] His own Son but gave Him up for us all, will He not also with Him freely and graciously give us all [other] things?
c. JEHOVAH RAPHA: The LORD my HEALER.
       - Exodus 15:26 
       - He is speaking here about physical diseases and physical healing. 
       - This promise is conditional upon obedience—yours and mine.
d. JEHOVAH NISSI: The LORD is my BANNER.
       - Exodus 17:15 AMPC — And Moses built an altar and called the name of it, The Lord is my Banner.
       - Moses built this altar to commemorate the victory God gave Israel over Amalek, when he had held up his hands until sunset (assisted by Aaron and Hur).
       - Song of Solomon 2:4 KJV — He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love. 
e. JEHOVAH SHALOM: The LORD is my PEACE.
       - Judges 6:24a AMPC — Then Gideon built an altar there to the Lord and called it, The Lord is Peace.
       - Shalom (peace) means more than freedom from conflict; it means prosperity, health, well-being, and faith in the face of conflict. 
       - John 14:27 KJV — Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. 
f. JEHOVAH RA’AH: The LORD is my SHEPHERD. 
       - Psalm 23:1 AMPC — The Lord is my Shepherd [to feed, guide, and shield me], I shall not lack. 
       - John 10:11 AMPC — I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd risks and lays down His [own] life for the sheep. 
       - 1 Peter 5:4 NKJV — And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away.
g. JEHOVAH TSIDKENU: The LORD our RIGHTEOUSNESS
       - Jeremiah 23:6 AMPC — In His days Judah shall be saved and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is His name by which He shall be called: The Lord Our Righteousness. 
       - 1 Corinthians 1:30 KJV — But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption.
h. JEHOVAH SABAOTH/TSEBAOTH: The LORD of HOSTS.
       - Psalm 24:10 AMPC — Who is [He then] this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory.
       - Elisha’s servant’s eyes are opened to see the hosts of God—horses and chariots of fire—surrounding the city (2 Kings 6:13-17).
i. JEHOVAH SHAMMAH: The LORD is THERE (Omnipresent).
       - Ezekiel 48:35 KJV — …and the name of the city from that day shall be, The Lord is there.
       - God—the great God—is ever present with His people! 
       - Hebrews 13:5b-6 NKJV — …for He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” 6 So we may boldly say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?”
